Community Outreach Programs

V.F.M.A.'s MISSON STATEMENT:

The Village Farmers Market Association is dedicated to educating Vandenberg Village and the surrounding communities about the benefits of consuming locally grown organic foods and ways to limit their waste by: recycling, reducing, composting, and reusing. This will be accomplished by: providing educational opportunities, promoting a locally based food system, and supporting local, sustainable, and responsible food production.

V.F.M.A.'s COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION:

The reason V.F.M.A. exists is to educate the community about the benefits of eating a locally based healthy diet. This not only helps people eat more nutrient rich food, but also supports local farmers who have chosen to produce food responsibly.

V.F.M.A. is spreading the word about eating local with "community outreach programs." These programs are geared towards educating both adults and children in fun and informal settings. Currently, V.F.M.A.'s community outreach programs consist of:

TEACHING GARDEN:

VFMA sponsors a weekly FREE Garden Club at Buena Vista Elementary School in Vandenberg Village. VFMA also sponsored and with the help of the community installed 6 raised beds in the school's garden area.

DOCUMENTARY SCREENINGS:

This is where V.F.M.A. sits back and lets the screen do all the talking. Recent "food movement" hits such as: Vanishing of the Bees, Fresh, and Food Inc. are sweeping the nation and making people more aware about the needs to change the current food system. V.F.M.A. has so far kept documentary screenings free of charge, in order to ensure all citizens are able to enjoy these informative and entertaining movies.

VFMA has screened the following documentaries: The Greenhorns, Fresh, Vanishing of the Bees and YERT.

Santa Barbara County Local Fest:

On October 1, 2011, VFMA hosted the first ever Santa Barbara County Local Fest. The festival featured local food, music, beer, and art.

These Programs that make a change in YOUR community would not be possible without donations.
